The HiSun 800 and 1000 engines are a V-Twin and the Primary Clutch is bolted directly to the crankshaft and do not have a oiled Wet Clutch ! MA or MA-2 Oil is not needed. 10w40 is a good cool weather oil, 20w50 for hot weather. Synthetic Oil is a stronger oil. Full, Partial or no Synthetic is approved for these engines.
When the Oil Changes Color ! Check your oil every time you gas up. This is an Off-Road dirt machine and requires more maintenance. Oil and Water lines can be damaged and must be checked often.
Ethanol Free ! The HiSun machines were never designed for 10% Ethanol. The cheaper fuel will always have 10% Ethanol, it’s up to the Gas/Station to determine if they want Ethanol in their Super Unleaded or not. Even if you have to drive a distance to find Ethanol, it is better for your UTV.
High Range is 3rd gear. Low range will reach speeds of 38 mph or more. Your UTV has a Rev Limit of 8,000 rpm and it will not let you blow it up. If you drive 20 mph or less, you must stay in Low. 20 mph or more, High range is fine. You can not shift on the fly ! If you come off a trail to a roadway, stop, shift to High and accelerate up to speed. Just don’t go slow in 3rd gear, High range, or you will burn up your clutch system. Driving slow in 3rd gear is hard on any machine.
Normally you can shift forward from Neutral into High easy and falls into gear. When you try to shift into Low or Reverse it doesn’t lock in. The gears won’t line up unless you tap the throttle pedal to get the engine to rev up just above idle. Simply tap the pedal and release, this will allow the transmission shaft to slightly turn and line up the gear teeth and lock in the shift. Hold the shift knob, tap the throttle and you will feel the gear shift lock in, it will be a positive feel.
All single cylinder 400, 450, 500, 550, 700, 750 have a internal Wet Shoe Clutch that must use MA or MA-2 approved Oil. Full Synthetic, Partial Synthetic doesn’t matter, MA, MA-2 does. 10w40 MA is a good all-a-round oil.

The 400 only has 1 forward gear, High range, which is like 3rd gear. The 400 has the same top speed as the 500-750 but they have a Low range gear, not the 400. The 400 engine was from the Yamaha 350-400 ATV which weighed 460 lbs. and had 22” tires. Then HiSun copied that engine and installed it in a UTV frame that weighs 1250 lbs and has 25” & 26” tires ! The 400 is perfect for light loads and personal transportation. Remember you are 3rd gear all the time!
